Walker ’47 derives its name from the Colt Walker, the largest and most powerful black powder repeating handgun ever made created in 1847 as a collaboration between gun manufacturer Samuel Colt and Texas Ranger Samuel Hamilton Walker. Texas Ranger Walker wanted a handgun that was extremely powerful at close range to use in the Mexican-American war in 1847. He approached Colt, requesting a large revolver to replace the single-shot Aston Johnson holster pistols then in use. Samuel Walker carried two of his namesake .44-.45 revolvers in the Mexican-American War, and was killed in battle the same year that his famous handgun was invented shortly after he had received them. Manufactured by Eli Whitney, Jr. at Whitneyville, Connecticut for Colt Firearms, only 1,100 of these guns were originally made and on October 9, 2008, a Walker that had been handed down from Pvt. Sam Wilson, a Texas Ranger and Mexican War veteran, sold at auction for $920,000.
Having our roots in black powder and the firearms that won the Old West, it was only natural that Walker ’47 be named after the incomparable handgun of that time. Established in 1993 and originally catering to the single-action cowboy shooter, Walker ’47 has added the dynamic of not only Old West lever actions, pistols, revolvers, shotguns and rifles but modern target and defense firearms as well, along with supplies for your shooting needs.
